Vientiane in Laos may be much smaller than other capital cities, but there are still many things to see and do when you visit. If you are planning a trip to the city sometime soon, you will want to see what is on offer before you go so you can plan your holiday. No matter what you like to see and do when on holiday, Vientiane has plenty to offer visitors. Below are some of the highlights that will help ensure you have a fantastic time visiting Laos and staying in the capital city.
The Presidential Palace
One of the top Vientiane attractions that many visitors go to is the presidential palace. The name of this palace is misleading, as it is not the palace that the president lives in, but it is still worth visiting. The palace opened in 1986 and is used for formal occasions, state functions, and visiting dignitaries.
COPE Visitor Centre
A visit to the COPE Visitor Centre will educate you on the secret war that took place in Laos at the same time as the Vietnam war. There are lots of displays and informative content on display that can show you the plight of the local people. Many people have lost limbs through the landmines and unexploded cluster bombs. Entry to this attraction is free, but there is a shop where all proceeds go towards rehabilitating people who have lost limbs.
Chao Anou Night Market
No visit to |Vientiane is complete without a walk around the Chao Anou night market, where there are plenty of things that you can buy. The market is orientated towards the local people, although it is popular with tourists. You will find various textiles, electronics, houseware, jewellery, handicrafts, and food for sale. It is the perfect way to build up an appetite before going for some delicious Laotian food and maybe pick up a few souvenirs along the way.
A Walk Along The Riverside
Another excellent way to enjoy Vientiane when you visit is to enjoy a romantic stroll along the Mekong riverside and take in the city’s ambience. It is a popular place for locals and tourists in the evening so that it can get busy. There are also plenty of snacks and drinks you can enjoy along the way, and it is an excellent way to see the sunset.
These are only a couple of things you can enjoy when you visit Vientiane, but there are plenty more besides. For more details of what is on offer when visiting this beautiful city, click here and see some of the available highlights.
