What Does a Trim Strap Do?

A trim strap is used to adjust the length of the line (generally at the front) in order to change the kite’s power. You can always access the trim strap from the bar. Other popular options include fabric straps, stopper balls or strap/cleat system. When you fly a new kite, it is important to identify the trim strap. The main difference between trimming and sheeting is that trimming adjusts the kite’s base power output while trimming adjusts its power relative to the bar position. Sheeting does not alter the length of a kite’s back lines. Instead, it affects the front lines. This adjusts the angle of the kite towards the wind or angle of attack.

The trim strap can be pulled in towards the rider to decrease the kite’s power. The front lines are shorter, which lowers the efficiency of the kite. Pulling on the repower line or strap will increase the length of the frontlines, creating a more lift-generating angle. Trimming a kite in light winds can cause more backstalling and oversheeting. It is important to adjust the trim level according to the wind speed and power. This is especially true for foil kites. To make the kite’s power more manageable in a particular situation, trimming is important. Trimming can increase the wind range of a kite but it is not a substitute for properly sizing the kitesurfing equipment for the conditions. The ability to trim your kite adds safety and versatility to it.
